Why We're Here

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

Dear Hive friends, Many of you know how our story began. That after our kids were born, everything changed. That we became acutely aware of the challenges of two parents working demanding full time jobs while balancing family life. And that we wanted to be there for our kids growing up. Although Ayla had always spoken up for the dandelions and the bees, becoming a parent made it clear that we would be failing our kids if we didn’t do something to help protect and preserve this planet. From plastic islands to clear cut forests to colony collapse – we felt duty bound to leave the earth in better shape than we found it. That’s the invisible contract we’d signed with our kids when we brought them into this world, that we would protect them. And that includes preserving and protecting the land, water, and air that sustains us, which of course includes our favorite pollinator, our dear honey bee. Committing to our kids is one of the reasons we opened The Hive Taproom just 4 years ago in July of 2018. So we’re thrilled to announce we've just joined 1% for the Planet to give back to our earth. 1% for the Planet is a global organization that exists to ensure our planet and future generations thrive. Launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the planet inspires businesses and individuals to support environmental nonprofits through membership and everyday actions. Through 1% for the Planet, businesses pledge to donate 1% of their gross annual sales to environmental nonprofits. Together they use the power of collective action to protect the environment and better our planet.

While you've always known we're here for the bees, we're excited to be an official member to show that our commitment is more than lip service.

As always, cheers to the bees! Ayla and Tim
